Wallpaper is back and has never been better! Well, to be honest, wallpaper never left it just wasn’t as widely used. Today, even your favorite home furniture retailers carry their own lines of wallpaper. West Elm and Serena & Lilly are a few examples of vendors carrying wallpapers-both permanent and removable. Event Target carries a large variety of wallpaper and change stock as new lines come to stores. Serena & Lilly even have their own paint collection that make finding complimentary paints easy, meanwhile West Elm has teamed up with Sherwin Williams to offer paint colors that rotate seasonally.
In addition to brick and mortar shops, we’ve found a number of online retailers with beautiful, quality wallpaper. Rocky Mountain Decals has a large selection of removable wallpapers and wall decals that can instantly transform a room. We love their floral and watercolor prints for nurseries and little girl’s rooms; they make a beautiful backdrop to a crib or headboard. Often times we suggest wallpapers for an accent wall, while keeping the remaining walls in a neutral or
complimentary color.
Our other favorite rooms for wallpaper include a bathroom, dining room, or foyer. Many times people think wallpaper in a powder room will make the bathroom feel slightly claustrophobic, but we believe the opposite to be true when the right pattern and color is used. For instance, this Serena & Lilly “Feather” wallpaper is a vertical print that adds height to the bathroom and looks fantastic with the white board and batten trim.
In one of our recent builds in Geneva, our client chose a texturized wallpaper in a beautiful blue/gray color that runs all the way up to the second floor foyer. The soft grasscloth-like surface is the perfect contrast to the white, wood trim. While the wallpaper makes a statement, it is neutral enough to layer with pictures and artwork. A quick note about removable wallpaper: we always encourage new home clients to consider removable wallpaper for select rooms throughout their home. Children’s rooms are at the top of this list! As the child grows they are likely eager to design their own room and choose their own finishes. With removable wallpaper, it’s easy to remove and won’t leave walls damaged or in need of paint. Another room we suggest removable wallpaper is a mudroom. While most
wallpapers are easy to clean, these high traffic areas encounter more damage than other rooms in the home.
